Spider Monkey
|
These
natives of Brazil, Guiana, and Ecuador are incredible climbers,
large groups of them moving through the trees together. They use
all five appendage (hands, feet, and tail) to literally run through
the trees. They take death-defying leaps of 30 feet or more, catching
hold of branches with their long, hook-like fingers. Young spider
monkeys sometimes make skydiving a game, leaping from the canopy,
free falling more than 20m, and landing with all five appendages
outstretched in the springy secondary growth. They then scramble
quickly to the canopy to repeat the game.
